Potential Magazine Names

Rock Culture - This name is based on the idea of the music magazine featuring influenial artists of the genre who helped to form a 'culture' and become part of its history.

The Now - I thought of this name as a way of suggesting that the music in the magazine is up-to-date, the artists are popular and all the information is relevant.

Fresh Rock - This title focuses around the idea of showing off the newest indie rock muic, as well as upcoming artists and musicians.

Indie Hub - With the above names i focused on artists from a particular time, such as new artists, or older popular artists. However with this name i went for the idea of the magazine being a home for a wide range of artists, old and new, as well as a sort of database for indie rock musicians.

Indie Invasion - I feel this title is most effective at appealing to the desired audience with its bold connotations of being everywhere, and being an integral part of daily life.

After producing the above magazine titles, I used the results from a target audience interview to select the favourite title, which turned out to be Indie Invasion.

I then went on to gather a selection of fonts to use with my magazine title and carried out a short tally questionnaire of which font was deemed most effective.

EXCESS

Magazines such as Q and Mojo use quite simple fonts without the addition of effects such as cracking or fading to the text, which is used mainly in rock magazines such as Kerrang!. Considering the fact that both Q and Mojo feature artists that are linked to Indie Rock, it seemed obvious to go for a font that is both simple and eye catching.

Blade Runner Movie Font:

This font leaves an impact due to its unique look and the line cutting through the text drawing your eye across the title. The tilt on the text excentuates this eye catching effect. Despite the aesthetics of the font I feel like it does not fit in with an Indie Rock magazine, but instead would be better suited to an electronic music magazine.

BigNoodleTitling:

This font is very simple yet draws no particular attention to itself so I would consider it to be a font that would work well on a contents page or as article headings.

Jersey Sharp:

I like this font as the letters all fit together in a seamless stream that similarly to the Blade Runner Movie Font draws your eyes from left to right across the title. This is a benefit when used as a title due to its eye catching nature.

Incised901 Nd Bt:

This font has a less angular look to the other fonts shown, which means it would work well better as a body font rather than a title.

Victory & Glory TP:

In comparison to the other fonts, I don't feel as though this particular one would fit in well with the magazine and the look I aim to achieve. First impressions of the font create links to fonts used in old west movies rather than anything you would see in a music magazine.

EXCESS:

This font has a nice look to it, however it could be considered difficult to read, especially in comparison to other much clearer fonts seen above it.

After deciding upon a suitable font for my title, I then went on to design a house style that could be used throughout. I chose to use red as the font colour due to its bold look and added a stroke effect which further enhanced the stand-out look whilst enabling the title to be distinguished from any background.

As the stroke can be changed it terms of size and colour, it can be adapted for any type of background, such as changing the stroke to white when on a black background, which would remain eye catching whilst looking aesthetically pleasing.
